    Common Questions About Image Compression

    Is compression done on my computer or phone, or does it get uploaded to a server?

    It's done entirely in your current device's browser, generating the compressed file directly — your original image is never uploaded to any server.

    Will compressing make my image blurry or hurt quality?

    JPG/WebP are lossy formats — the lower the quality slider, the smaller the file, but the more detail is lost. In the common 70%~90% quality range, the compressed result and the original are nearly indistinguishable to the naked eye. We recommend compressing once with the default quality, checking the before/after comparison slider, and raising the quality if you're not satisfied. PNG is a lossless format — quality itself won't degrade from compression, there's just no quality level to adjust, and how much the size shrinks depends on how optimized the original already was.

    How does “compress to a target size” work, and why does it sometimes not hit the target?

    Target size mode automatically tries different compression quality levels in your browser, and shrinks pixel dimensions if necessary, until the file size drops below your target. PNG/GIF are converted to JPG to actually hit the target KB. Only when the target is set extremely small (a few KB) or the image itself is very information-dense might it still not reach the target — most common form limits of 100–500KB are usually achievable.

    Does a compressed GIF still keep its animation?

    Current compression treats GIF as a static image (first frame only): quality-based compression produces a PNG, target-size mode produces a JPG — neither mode preserves animation. If you need to keep the animation, skip compression for now, or use a tool designed for frame-by-frame GIF editing.

    What's the maximum number of images I can compress at once — is there a limit?

    There's no fixed limit — you can select multiple images for batch compression at once. The actual number you can process is mainly limited by your device's memory and performance; we recommend keeping each image under 20MB.

    Will the compressed image keep its EXIF capture data and PNG transparency?

    Compression fundamentally re-encodes the image: PNG's transparency channel is preserved in quality mode; in target-size mode, PNG/GIF are converted to JPG and transparent areas are filled with white. The original's EXIF capture data and location metadata are not preserved after re-encoding — use the “EXIF Viewer/Remover” tool if you specifically need to view or remove that data.

    PNG re-compressed with more efficient encoding settings in quality mode — screenshots and UI mockups with large flat color areas usually shrink noticeably. If the original was already well-optimized, little to no size change is normal. When you need a firm upper limit, use “target size” mode.

      Re-encoded entirely in your browser

      Compression happens directly on your device — the whole process never touches a server. It prioritizes professional compression engines (MozJPEG / WebP / Oxipng) for re-encoding, automatically falling back to the browser's built-in Canvas encoding when a network resource is unavailable. Both the original and compressed images only exist in your device's memory.

      How target size mode automatically finds the right quality

      After choosing “compress to target size,” the tool repeatedly tries different quality levels and re-encodes in your browser, gradually approaching your target size to find the sweet spot of “hitting the size limit while keeping quality as high as possible.” If lowering quality alone isn't enough, it will then gradually shrink pixel dimensions and try again. PNG/GIF are converted to JPG in this mode (the most common requirement for form uploads), making it easier to truly compress under the target KB.
