Resize & pixels
The avatar cut off the chin. The form says longest side 800. Crop, or resize?
The circle sliced the chin. Or the admin wrote “longest side no more than 800.” Both sound like the picture is too big. One is a frame. One is a pixel cap. Read which sentence they wrote before you pick a tool.
The avatar circle cut off the chin. Or the admin wrote “longest side no more than 800.” Both sound like the picture is too big. They are not the same job. One is a frame. One is a pixel cap.
If they only want a square, crop one photo. If they named a longest side — or the file is simply too many pixels — resize, and that step can batch. Each file stays at or under 20MB. Stay local.
Pixel cap, or just a square?
Read the error before you pick a tool. Shrinking will not put a chin back. Cropping a tall shot into a square will not, by itself, satisfy “longest side no more than 800”:
- The circle or square window sliced the chin, hair, or ears — they want a square (or their own ratio), not fewer pixels. Crop that one photo to 1:1. If the form is an ID shot, follow the crop walkthrough.
- The page says “image too large,” “max 800px,” or “longest side must not exceed 800” — that is a pixel cap. Resize. Do not crop just to make the number smaller.
- A stack of already-framed shots all need the same longest side — resize can batch. Crop is one photo at a time, because each face sits in a different place.
- The message is about KB (“under 200KB,” or the file’s weight, not its pixels) — that is compress, not resize. Follow the target-KB walkthrough.
- The file is still iPhone
.heic— follow the HEIC to JPG walkthrough first. A see-through PNG the form will not take — follow PNG to JPG after the size is right.
ImageAwe Resize can batch. Many files in, the same pixel rule out — not one merged image. Crop stays one photo per session. Keep each file at or under 20MB. Preview and export stay in the browser.
Land the long edge on 800 without stretching the face
Open Resize when the rule is pixels:
- Read the line again. “Longest side ≤ 800” means the longer edge lands on 800 and the other edge follows. If the chin is already gone, stop and crop first. A square preset fills a box and trims the overflow — that is a crop wearing a size. For a longest-side cap, stay on pixel mode.
- Keep the aspect lock on. The number you type is the width. Height is read-only and follows, so the face is not stretched. Wider than tall, or already square: put 800 in the width box — the long edge is the width. A portrait selfie is taller than it is wide: width 800 makes the height longer than 800, and the long edge still fails. Lower the width until the height box shows 800 — about 800 × (original width ÷ original height). One file or a set. Each image at or under 20MB. Still holding
.heic? That is the HEIC path. - Resize and download. One file downloads directly; a set can zip. If they also wanted a square and you have not cropped, the circle will still cut the chin — open Crop for that one photo, then resize if the pixel cap remains.
ImageAwe resizes in the browser on this device. Profile photos and form shots stay local. There is no upload step.
Pixels are right — the form still bounces it?
A successful resize only proves the edges. The next error is usually a different rule:
- The window still cuts the chin — the pixel count is right and the frame is wrong. Crop that single photo with the ID and avatar crop guide.
- The page still says “under 200KB” — follow target-KB compress on the resized file, or open Compress Image.
- They want JPG and you still have a see-through PNG — fill white, then convert with the PNG to JPG walkthrough. A product stuck on a room is the fill-white guide, not a resize.
- The phone file will not open — convert HEIC to JPG first, then resize the JPG.
Wrap-up
A chopped chin is a frame. “Longest side 800” is a pixel cap. Crop the square one photo at a time. Resize when the number is the rule — that step can batch, each file at or under 20MB, on this device. Send the file that matches the sentence they wrote.

After you resize
Can I resize a whole folder of avatars at once?
Yes, when they share the same pixel rule. Resize accepts a batch. Crop does not — each face sits in a different place, so you frame one photo at a time. Keep each file at or under 20MB.
The circle cut my chin. Will shrinking fix it?
No. Shrinking keeps the same framing. If the window slices the chin, crop that one photo to 1:1 first. Resize only if they still name a longest side such as 800.
Does resizing upload my photo?
No. Decode and export run in the browser on this device. Profile photos and form shots stay local. There is no “upload first, resize later” step.
I set the width to 800 and the form still says the longest side is too long.
With the ratio locked, only the width is the number you type. Height follows. On a portrait selfie, width 800 makes the height longer than 800, so the long edge still fails. Lower the width until the height box shows 800. If the complaint is KB, not pixels, compress that file instead.
