Compress & upload

Form says the image is too large? Set the KB first

“File exceeds the limit” or “upload under 200KB” usually means you missed the size cap — not that compression is mysterious. Use target-size mode for the shortest path, entirely in the browser.

Submitting paperwork, a resume headshot, or product shots to an admin panel — then “image too large.” Dragging the quality slider over and over is slow and often muddy. Faster approach: read the allowed KB, then hit it with target-size compression.

Order: read the cap → match format → target-KB compress → (if it still fails, check dimensions).

1. See what the form actually blocks

Error copy usually falls into a few buckets — don’t treat them the same:

What it roughly meansWhat to do
Over 200KB / 500KB / 2MBUse Compress Image “target size” with that number
JPG / PNG onlyConvert format first, then compress
Width under xxx pxResize first, then compress
Unsupported format (HEIC, etc.)Convert to JPG/PNG; size is step two

ID photos and scans with personal data: prefer local compression. ImageAwe reads and writes in the browser — originals aren’t sent to an upload backend.

2. Aim at the KB with target size

Open Compress Image:

  1. Drop images (multi-select is fine).
  2. Choose target size / target KB and enter the form’s limit (e.g. 200). A little headroom helps — try 190 if the cap is 200.
  3. Export and download, then upload again. Batches can zip.

Skip the “quality 90 → 80 → 70” guesswork. Target mode balances look against the size constraint for you.

3. When it’s soft or won’t go low enough

  • Very large pixel width → shrink sides first, then hit the KB; usually looks better.
  • Transparent PNG but the form wants JPG → convert to JPG, then compress; size often drops fast.
  • Already small but still rejected → confirm you didn’t upload the wrong file, or that the system caps resolution instead.

4. Paths by job

Applications / resume

Most fields want JPG + a tiny cap. Confirm the extension, then target KB.

Ecommerce uploads

Often format + longest side together. Unify size, then batch to the site limit.

Phone camera originals

Both heavy and huge in pixels. Decide whether to resize before target KB.

Wrap-up

Rejected oversized uploads are about matching the rule, not crushing quality to zero. Read the KB → align format → local target compress; then check pixel size if needed. That order clears most forms on the first try.

Extra

After you compress

Will target-size mode look badly soft?

It tries to protect look within the size cap — stabler than slamming quality to the bottom. If it’s still soft, shrink pixel dimensions first (Resize), then compress; that usually beats crushing a huge canvas.

Can I batch many files to the same KB?

Yes. Compress Image supports multi-select; each file uses the same target, then you can download a zip. Keep singles around 20MB or under.

The form wants JPG but I have PNG / HEIC?

Convert to JPG first, then set the target KB. Reversing the order can work, but matching format requirements first means fewer retries.

I hit 200KB and upload still fails?

Check three things: the extension matches what the form asks for; you didn’t re-upload the original by mistake; some systems also cap resolution. Read the error, then decide whether to compress more, convert, or resize.
